Operation Pompous Prosperity Guardian, the US-commanded naval task force assigned to stop the Yemenis from closing the Red Sea to Israel-supporting shipping, got off to a roaring start when the Spanish, French, Italians, Saudis, Egyptians, UAEers, everybody
Thank you for today's dose of actual facts, and I am glad your first cousin's son is safer.
I keep watching the world going crazier and crazier, and I don't think it'll stop until Joe Biden is out of office. Ukraine is forgotten by most Americans (though I still see daily reports of 600 - 1000 Ukrainian soldiers killed daily) as the focus shifts to Palestine quite successfully. In Portland, Christmas celebrations, bridges and airport access have been shut down recently.
I hope we all will get a chance to enjoy the start of the year without WW III starting immediately!
As for Portland, well, there's no penalty for disrupting the city. Protests shut down freeways on a couple of nights when Trump was elected, for over a year of protests and vandalism for George Floyd, homeless tents everywhere, provided by the county, and most recently Palestinian protests. No arrests for shutting down access to the airport (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12923649/amp/Pro-Palestine-protestors-Portland-Airport.html).
It's sad - I was in the downtown Pioneer Place mall a couple of weeks ago, a multi-story complex connected by skywalks. It was virtually empty after years of damage to downtown. It was also targeted by Palestinian protesters, but the decline of the city had already done much already.
I also should clarify - just because I disagree with pointless Palestinian protests in an already hurting city, it doesn't mean I am a Zionist.
If they want meaningful protests, protest the White House, Congress, Congressmens' residences - the people who make the decisions. All these protests do is take support away from their cause.
Damn. Portland sounds like a bad alternate universe, and I've BEEN to Portland several times, but the last time was in 1990. I was in the Navy, and took some leave to see my uncle who lived near Sandy, and hear his fascinating life story, the year before he died of cancer.
That part of the country was so beautiful. Portland seemed like a nice city. I am so sorry to hear these stories about it, and you aren't the only source by any means.
Portland and the area still have many beautiful places, and I hope the blight can be cleaned up in not too many years. At least I can still see snowcapped volcanoes :-)
Hooray that your cousin's son and his fellow Navy servicemembers are steaming out of harm's way. As if we needed to put them in harm's way to protect a freakin' genocide in Gaza by Israel in the first place! I'm waiting for the Epstein list to reveal who's being blackmailed by Mossad into cooperating with Israel's war crimes.
Thanks to OB and all for commentary....I've heard the 2024 election (assuming one will be held) portends the biggest defeat ever for the political/crime syndicate Clinton-Obama cartel. As I watch reruns of the 1959-62 Untouchables series with Robert Stack, it has occurred to me that the crime syndicates never really went away, they just became legal. Per Garland Nixon's recommendation, just read the worthwhile book CONJURING HITLER....briefly, mentions the MacKinder theory which argues the critical north-south axis extending from east of Finland south to the Mediterranean Sea....Critical border states on this axis are Ukraine and now (in the early 20th century of MacKinder created by Balfour Declaration) the state of Israel.....The game plan since the early 20th century is to prevent German-Russian unification, uniting Russian natural resources with German industry….and threaten Anglo empire’s seapower dependent hegemony. Anglo empire relies on seapower and separating the heartland through control of Ukraine and Israel. Happy New Year everyone and keep up the posts!
Yeah, it's a big relief for your cousin's son, alright, but isn't this a big TELL regarding the United Snakes' cowboy diplomacy! I'm so appalled by the Dept of State and MIC as well as the blithering idiots who decided this action. I wonder - will there be pushback? No.. This will be suppressed. But, who better to deliver a message to push back than an aircraft carrier fresh from the Red Sea? Where the hell are we going with our foreign policy? It's gone beyond any warning that could be heard in DC. Meanwhile, B-r-r--r-r-r-r goes the money printing machine.
The USS Ford is undercrewed due to several years of Navy recruiting shortfalls. It has reached the point that the ship operates at a deficit when at sea, because there are not enough crew members to perform required routine maintenance. This means that whenever the ship goes to sea it is further cannibalizing the service life in order to do so.
Are giant aircraft carriers obsolete? They are really expensive and slow and easy to spot and make very very very compelling targets and I just dont think it is 1942 any more?
They're as obsolete now as battleships were in 1941. The missile technology has advanced to the point it's impossible to defend the carriers if they're in range of a swarm of them, just like air power made battleships obsolete.
I don’t know anything about jurisprudence but I find it fascinating all the same.
In what appears to be a positive development. More please!

Why did they shut down celebrations, bridges, and airport access in Portland? There' been nothing remotely like that in Ohio.
It's been that way around the world - "No XMas as Usual in a Genocide" movement which I know really helps their cause (sarcasm). See https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/24/pro-palestinian-marches-us-cities-christmas for more.

You may be clarifying for others, but I was already well aware of that, my friend.
Thank you, tovarich! Yes, it's a new world here -

Yeah, kinda hard to spoil Mt. Hood.

You said a mouthful there, hi 5 brother.
Great post, I like the lighthearted dealing with serious subjects it really works in this post.
Thanks Ohio, your post really cheered me up.

Pithy insightful and funny. Thanks!

Heh! I'm going to have to have a talk with my cousin. I'd love to talk with his son, but who knows when that can happen?
