It's important to realize that up until 1991 Ukrainians and Russians lived in the same country - the Soviet Union. There was no more difference between them than there is between Ohio and Indiana. Before that, they were together in the Russian Empire - but as a historian you know the details of borders better than I do.
So yes, there was a lot of intermarriage and travel. I now family in both Ukraine and Russia, and my wife says everyone in Ukraine can speak Russian, though Ukrainian is used more in western Ukraine than in the east. My wife is fluent in both and uses them interchangeably. Remember that Russian is Zelensky's native language!
I believe that it was only after 2013 that differences were manufactured and barriers between the two countries were created.

You're very right that Obama should have insisted on the implementation of Minsk. I blame Biden though as he was the person with 11 or 12 trips to Kiev and insisted on having the Prosecutor General fired, in exchange for not holding up a billion dollars in aid. And, of course, that ended the investigation of the company where Biden's son was on the board.
It's finally making it into the media for an impeachment investigation.
Maybe Obama was just smarter at hiding it, but I do blame Biden more for his active role.

Yes you are right about 2013, even though the CIA helped the old
Banderites to leave the country as well as to prepare them as a new
underground since 1945.
You always blame Biden, which is understandable. However the coup on
the Maidan happened under Obama. And this nobelpeaceprice winner
should have stopped Poroshenko and insisted on the MinskII agreement
We now heard it from Stoltenberg that Ukrainian soldiers began training
under NATO since 2014. Biden just followed the prewritten script further.
