Of note, Killers of the Flower Moon, due out in theaters soon tells yet another chapter of the indigenous peoples' plight within the US - occurred at/near Pawhuska, Oklahoma about 40 miles from my home town, Ponca City, Oklahoma.
I'm going to see this movie. That makes two this year (an all time record)... Okay, that makes three, and another one was the well intended Oppenheimer. This is the year of taking a look at ourselves and owning something.
I think you'll enjoy it - it received a 9 minute standing ovation from the virtue signallers @ the Cannes Film Festival....I read the book and to other historical books on OK...This is one story- the tip of the iceberg of a mega corruption issue that spanned from the prairies to where else?? Washington, DC's political establishment (Gore family was a senator at the time/nfi)....But that's another story...The books that I read, A LIFE ON FIRE, was revelatory about Oklahoma social justice crusader Cate Barnard whose life contrasted with the 'basket of deplorables' depiction that one often gets about people from outside the beltway or coastal America....Briefly, Barnard grew up in very rudimentary conditions and lost her mother at a very young age (similar to my own mother's story) and then went on to be influential in crafting a very progressive Constitution for Oklahoma's statehood. While Barnard initially focused on reform of social institutions across the spectrum, she ended up focusing on Native Americans (subjects of Killers of Flower Moon) and the plights of the orphans who were the victims of these countless scam operations. Yet another great historian of the Oklahoma ilk was Angie Debo who did monumental work on the history of Native Americans. The Debo work that I read was A History of Indians of the United States which I think one can read free through some online mechanism.
Well said. I am forced to learn American history later than I should have, but at least I learn. That's one of the things you did on JPR and are doing here in a more detailed way. Stupid me... I actually thought Golda Meir WAS a Palestinian!
