My son's godparents live in Querétaro de Santiago, the city where Maximillian was captured and executed. Wonderful place to visit if one finds the history interesting. (Not far from where the Grito de Dolores" launched the Mexican Civil War too.) It's a modern city - the country's aerospace manufacturing hub - but they've done a remarkable job preserving the city's colonial past.

Anyway: as Ana reminded us yesterday, Cinco de Mayo is a much bigger deal in the US than in Mexico.

That's certainly true. I grew up in San Antonio, and never even heard of the Cinco de Mayo until the 1970s. Then it was just an excuse to have another fiesta; always a good idea IMO.

The big Mexican holiday there was, and I imagine still is, Diez y Seis, September 16, Mexican Independence Day. There was a big parade, and all the Texan ethnicities had their own floats in it. Don't know if they still do that or not.

El Grito. Father call for revolution in 1810. It took the 12 years to kick the Spanish out and exchange them for their own rapacious ruling class, and another century before they could bring them down a few pegs.
